CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE LIBRARIANSHIP
Cultural Awareness, and Inclusive Practice
LIS 60030: People in the Information Ecology
I apply Information Grounds Theory to an analysis of the Information Needs and Information Behaviors of Hispanic Communities in the United States. I consider some ways in which this and related theoretical frameworks can motivate libraries to engage in more effective Hispanic outreach.
PLO: Critique and synthesize research and identify appropriate research methodologies to solve problems in the the field.
PC: Recognizes systems of oppression, discrimination, and exclusion in the community and its institutions, including the library, and interrupts and/or counteracts them by way of culturally aware services.
LIS 60613: Selection and Acquisition of Library Material
I evaluate both collection management data and community demographic date for a rural public library in Burton, Ohio to evaluate the library’s Juvenile Biography section and reflect upon how well it serves the information needs of the Burton community.
PLO: Evaluate systems and technologies relevant to a particular information content.
PC: Maintains a diverse collection that is inclusive of the needs of all children and their caregivers in the community and recognizes children’s need to see and learn about people like and unlike themselves in the materials they access.

INFORMATION LITERACY
LIS 60613: Information Literacy Initiatives and Instruction
Applying scholarship on information and media literacy for young children, I argue for the need to incorporate information literacy at younger ages, and propose information literacy interventions for standard storytime read-aloud activities.
PLO: Apply the field's functional theories, principles, values, ethics and skills to everyday practice.
PC: Designs programs that foster a variety of literacies and learning methods including but not limited to pre-literacy, early literacy, family literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, computational thinking, STEM, and maker-centered learning.
LIS 60630: Reference Sources & Services to Youth
I synthesize theoretical frameworks on information literacy along with scholarship on the reading and editing of Wikipedia and propose methods to use Wikipedia to promote information literacy.
PLO: Analyze and engage in the changing cultural, educational and social roles and responsibilities of librarians/information professionals and the environments they work in within the global society.
PC: Instructs and supports children in the physical and digital use of library tools and resources, information gathering, and research skills, and empowers all children, families, and their caregivers to choose materials and services on their own.

EARLY LITERACY COMPONENTS
Addressing Social Emotional Learning, STEAM, & Diversity in Early Literacy
LIS 60625: Engaging Children and Families
I design an SEL-oriented storytime which incorporates both emotional self-awareness and social relationship-awareness, using a combination of picture books, self-written songs, and related activities.
PLO: Apply the field's functional theories, principles, values, ethics and skills to everyday practice.
PC: Designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates a variety of diverse programs for children, with consideration of equity, diversity, and inclusion; principles of child development; and the needs, interests, and goals of all children, their caregivers, and educators in the community.
LIS 60629: Engaging School Age Children
I use resource evaluation techniques to assemble a library resource kit for Kindergarten-2nd grade children with a “Frogs and Toads” theme, combining SEL, STEAM, and early literacy elements to meet the literacy needs of elementary school students.
PLO: Apply the field's functional theories, principles, values, ethics and skills to everyday practice.
PC: Demonstrates knowledge, management, use and appreciation of children’s literature, multimodal materials, digital media, and other materials that contribute to a diverse, current, and relevant children’s collection.
LIS 61095: Information Services to Diverse Populations
I describe the 1-2-3 Read program offered at Cuyahoga County Public Library, an at-risk literacy intervention program taking place after-school. I reflect upon its effectiveness and on the cultural dynamics present between volunteers and participants.

PC: Communicates and collaborates in partnership with other agencies, institutions, and organizations serving children in the community to achieve common goals and overcome barriers created by socioeconomic circumstances, race, culture, privilege, language, gender, ability, religion, immigration status, commercialism, and other diversities.
